My work is often referred to as non-objective abstract art as I make an effort not to portray any recognizable geometric form and do not start with a specific object in my mind. It is with this midset that I believe opens us as humans to a realm completely full of possibilites. The art is then a communication of ones soul in a sense.
Questions that are often referred to as reigous or scientific emerge in my work. I am interested in the relationship of life and death and the paintings I produce are generally an expression of an emotion within my personal investigation of this relationship. Things that we as humans cannot fully explain such as emotions and questions about our existence are explored as well.
I evoke the viewer with my art to provide different levels of engagement. If you view my art looking for answers you will leave with more questions.
EDUCATION
I have a Bachelors of Science in Architecture from the University of Minnesota and use that artistic knowledge in my artwork. In my studies I experienced an intense studio arts education where formal artistic principles were studied such as form, color, composition, line, and etc... However, my appreciation for art is inherent within myself. It is something that I cannot escape and feel a very strong need to pursue and study on my own. I have constantly received mentoring from other artists and feel that I will never be completed with my education as I am always learning.
INFLUENCES
Nothing in this world is truely original and free from outside influences. I have many artists whom I admire and their work has influencd my outlook and approach on art. I particularly admire abstract expressionistic painters like Jackson Pollock, Cy Twombly, Robert Motherwell and perhaps the most influential on my work was my father & artist, Bill Mitchell.
